What Do I Need To Bring?

Well that depends… If you are just coming in to see if Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for you then we recommend you just come in a comfortable set of training/gym clothes such as shorts and a t-shirt or rash vest.

This is what is usually worn during the No Gi BJJ classes and when starting regular BJJ classes until you are able to buy a Gi.

Other than that perhaps a bottle of water, a small towel, an open mind, a big smile and a willingness to learn! J

What Is The Difference Between Gi And No Gi?

A Gi is a Martial Arts uniform that kinda looks like pyjamas! A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi also known as a kimono is what is worn during most BJJ classes. It’s a training tool that serves many purposes such as:

– learning to potentially use another person’s clothing to gain leverage and control over them

– Encouraging creativity through the limitless variations of techniques available in the Gi

– Greater Cleanliness and Hygiene

No Gi BJJ training is Jiu Jitsu as applied without the use of the Gi. In No Gi classes, you learn to develop leverage and control solely through control and manipulation of the opponent’s body by grabbing wrists, ankles, necks etc. instead of the cloth of the Gi.

There is an age old debate amongst Jiu Jitsu practitioners as to what is more important. Training with Gi or No Gi and which is more technical and beneficial? My thoughts are they are both technical in their own right and complement each other. Most people have limited time to train so I say do whatever makes you happy and you enjoy more! As long as you are having fun and training consistently you will get better!
